Moto XXX Round 13 Race Report: Irving, Texas

Before taking a much needed break, the Amp&squot;d Mobile AMA Supercross series stopped in Irving, Texas and Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys also host of round 13. Rain, wind and even the occasional tornado warning plagued the Dallas area all week. When the sky opened up Friday evening everyone was expecting a mud race. Fortunately, the sky cleared up and Saturday brought warm weather, sunny skies and a race track that was in pretty good shape.

Due to the weather, the AMA canceled the first round of practice leaving the riders little time to get accustomed to the new track design. Josh Summey got off to a strong start in practice, holding a top three time for the first half of the session. Kyle Lewis also rode well and both riders easily qualified into the 40 rider field.

Based on the qualifying times, Kyle Lewis was seeded into the first heat race of the night. In typical Lewis fashion, "Lucky" got off to a good start and completed lap one in third place. Lewis was riding strong and looked to have a qualifying spot locked up until a mistake on a tricky on-off section saw Lewis hit the ground. After getting to his feet, Lewis headed back to the truck to regroup for the LCQ.

Heat race number two saw Josh Summey going to the line with the seventh pick. As the pack rounded turn one and headed into a long rhythm section, Summey darted to the inside and exited turn two in fourth place. Summey spent the next couple of laps battling with factory riders before settling into a comfortable pace, eventually crossing the line in sixth position and securing his spot on the line for the main event.

Kyle Lewis lined up far outside of the start gate for the Supercross LCQ. Lewis got a decent start and was battling for fifth place at the end of lap one. Over the next few laps, Kyle put in consistent times and on fifth lap set his bet time of the day. Unfortunately, time would run out and the Moto XXX pilot would fall just one spot short of the main event, in turn receiving the Racer X Gas Card.

By time the Supercross class lined up for the start of the main event the track was holding up quite well. While the jumps were littered with deep ruts and the turns developed some good size braking bumps, the event was far from a mud race. Josh lined up one spot to the right of the "dog house" and got off the line really well. As the pack funneled into turn one, Josh was forced to brake and weave his way through pack entering the rhythm section. At the end of lap one, Summey sat in 10th place looking to get around the two riders directly in front of him. For the next five laps, Josh rode well and was looking to grab his fourth top 10 finish in a row when disaster struck half way through lap seven. As Josh tried to triple out of a rutted rhythm section, his foot pegs drug on the face of the take off and sent the bike into a violent endo. With no other option, Summey hit the eject button, bailed off the bike and landed hard at the end of the section. He limped to the side of the track to catch his breath before heading back to the truck, visibly disappointed but fortunately uninjured. After the race, Summey commented; "I felt like I was riding well tonight. Unfortunately, my pegs got caught in one of the deep ruts and I had no choice but to jump off. I am going to enjoy the next couple of weeks and after the break, I plan on being back in the top 10 where I belong."

While the next couple weekends are off weekends for the Supercross series, Moto XXX is already beginning to prepare for their assault on the outdoor nationals starting in just six short weeks. After the break, the racing resumes in Detroit, Michigan and Ford Field for round 14. See you there!
