Moto XXX Round 12 Race Report: Indianapolis, Indiana
Round 12 of the AMA Amp&squot;d Mobile Supercross series took place this past weekend in the home of the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts. The RCA dome in Indianapolis, Indiana, is typically one of the colder races of the year but with the changes in this years schedule the weather was a lot warmer and the racing was a lot closer than past years.
Once the timed practice sessions were all completed, Josh Summey and Kyle Lewis started the night off together in heat race one with Summey on the inside and Lewis on the outside. Lewis got the better jump of the two and was looking good coming down the long start straight. As the pack headed into turn one, "Lucky" ran out of real estate, was pushed off the track and went down. Summey was able to shoot to the inside and entered the whoops in mid-pack. Lewis got back up and going but was already a half lap down with time running out. As the pack got the half-way sign, Summey was within qualifying position holding down seventh place. Knowing that he was in qualifying position, Josh rode smart and crossed the line seventh. Kyle rode strong but couldn&squot;t make up the gap and finished in 19th.
The Supercross LCQ is by far the toughest race of the night. Lewis again lined up on the outside of the start line, got a good jump off the gate but once again ran out of room and was forced to back off and settle for a mid-pack start. He made some quick passes on the first lap and was passing for a top five position on lap two when another rider made a mistake in a tricky rhythm section. Lewis was forced to take evasive action to avoid a mid-air collision with the rider he was overtaking and was forced to land on a tuff block resulting in a crash. Lewis was uninjured however, unable to finish and was credited with 20th place.
With lap times in the mid-40 second range and a track that was very tough to pass on, getting a good start was crucial. For the main event, Josh lined up two spots outside of the dog house and was looking forward to another top 10 finish. As the gate dropped, Summey got off the line well but was quickly pinched off and forced to cut to the inside of the first turn. As the pack headed back down the start straight Josh sat in 15th place looking to pass the two riders directly in front of him. By lap three he had moved up a couple of spots and was now in 13th. As Josh put in consistent laps, the riders in front of him continued to make mistakes allowing Josh to sneak past them and work his way up. On lap 12 he had moved all the way up to 10th place and settled into a fast pace that would ultimately see him cross the finish line in the number 10 position. This marks the third consecutive 10th place finish for Josh and he is in some fast company finishing right behind numerous factory riders. After the race, Josh commented about his new found consistency; "I didn&squot;t get the best starts tonight but I have really been trying to focus on riding smart. I knew I had the speed to get some good results, it was just a matter of focusing and riding consistent laps with no mistakes."
The series heads to Irving, Texas, and Texas Stadium this weekend for round 13 of the 16 race series. Josh hopes to grab another top 10 finish before the series take a much needed break resuming on April 21 in Detroit. See you there!
