Moto XXX Round 11 Race Report: Orlando, Florida

This past weekend the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross series was back in Florida for the second and final time of 2007. The Citrus Bowl in Orlando played host to round 11 of the 16 race series and the racing was some of the best of the year.

Yoshihide Fukudome has improved his Supercross skills drastically over the first three rounds of the East coast Lites series and was looking forward to his first trip to Orlando. “Dome” lined up for heat race one with hopes of making his first main event of the year. Even though he didn’t get the best start he rode smart and avoided the numerous crashes around him. By the half way point he moved into the seventh position and was riding well. He put in four more consistent laps, ultimately being credited with ninth place and a spot on the line in the main event.

Josh Summey once again qualified top 10 into the night program and went to the line fifth for heat race one. After a decent start, Josh made a few smart passes and quickly found himself in the number six position. Josh rode smooth and consistent qualifying easily and saving his speed for the main event.

Kyle Lewis lined up for heat number two and was looking to continue his holeshot streak from Daytona where he pulled two big starts in both the heat race and main event. It was not to be as “Lucky” rounded turn one running mid-pack. Disaster struck shortly after as Lewis snagged a tough block and twisted his ankle. He tried to ride but pulled off to get checked out before trying to regroup for the always tough LCQ.

Fighting through the pain, Kyle lined up for the LCQ. Unfortunately, after a decent start the pain would prove to be too much and after two laps Lewis was forced to retire for the evening.

Excited about making his first-ever main event, Yoshihide Fukudome picked his spot on the line for the 22 rider Lites main event. “Dome” got off the line well but it would not count as the race was red flagged for two downed riders. The restart was a little better as Fukudome rounded turn one sitting 12th. His luck would run out two short laps later as he collided into a downed rider’s bike after the whoop section coming to an abrupt stop. The shear force of the impact resulted in a possible broken scaphoid (navicular) bone in his wrist and a disappointing end to Fukudome’s evening.

Josh Summey felt confident and had visions of garnering another top 10 finish in the premier class. As the gate hit the soft Florida sand, the 21 riders took off down the long start straight. Josh came out of turn one in good position and by the end of lap two had worked his way into 10th place. At the half way mark, Summey was still on the gas battling for position. After holding off a few late race charges from other riders and getting around downed bikes, Josh crossed the finish line in the 10th position. This marks Josh’s second consecutive top 10 appearance and his third of the year. Visibly excited after the race Josh commented; “It feels really good to come to Orlando and back-up my strong finish from Daytona. I’ve learned a lot the last couple of weeks and I plan on being inside the top 10 for the rest of the season.” Josh currently sits 15th overall with five rounds remaining.

While the last two weekends have enjoyed great racing and great weather, it’s time to put away the shorts and get the jackets back out as the series heads North to Indianapolis, Indiana, and the RCA Dome for the 12th round of series. See you there!
