Moto XXX Raises the Bar in San Diego
Picking up where they left off the previous weekend in Anaheim, Team Unbound Energy/Moto XXX continued to make improvements in San Diego. With riders and bikes improving simultaneously, the results in San Diego were the best of the year.
Both Kyle Lewis and Timmy Ferry were placed in a difficult qualifying group. Even though several of the factory heavyweights were on the line, both riders nearly qualified out of their heat race. Despite coming up just short, they seemed to be favorites in the semi. After a lackluster start, Ferry came through the pack to finish second. Based on lap times and what was obvious to the average spectator, if there was one more lap - but there wasn&squot;t. Lewis followed suit and transferred directly to the main.
The main event, of course, is the only thing that matters at the end of the night. Lewis came up short in his bid for the holeshot, but it wasn&squot;t for lack of trying. "Lucky committed to the outside of the sweeping left-hander, but got closed off and ended up in the middle of the pack. Ferry found himself toward the middle as well, but immediately began making passes. Perhaps a little too eager, "Red Dog" crashed less than two laps into the race. He re-mounted in 19th position and chased the pack down. Once he reeled the back markers in, he started slicing his way forward once again. This time, he kept it on two wheels and made carefully executed passes on several riders. Lewis kept his cool the whole time and rode toward the front of the privateer ranks. By the end of the 20 laps, Ferry had moved all the way up to 11th place. Once again, he had his sights set on tenth and would have gotten it with a little more time. Lewis finished 12th.
The final positions were season-bests for both riders and the team. Ferry moved into 16th place in the series, while Lewis gained a position and now holds 18th. As the series heads east next week, the team is running like a finely tuned machine. The top two riders are showing consistent improvement with each week and newcomer, Juss Laansoo could be joining them as soon as this weekend, depending on the progress of his foot injury.
