Cylinder Sleeve Installation on 2008-2013 Ford 6.4L Diesel Engines

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information regarding cylinder sleeve installation for 2008-2013 Ford 6.4L diesel engines. This salvage repair usually occurs after one cylinder bore becomes excessively scored from abnormal combustion activity.
The cylinder block for this engine has cylinders that extend down into the lower crankcase and are somewhat free standing or unsupported as shown in the photo below. That fact has led some to believe that installing a conventional sleeve repair using a lower ledge to rest the sleeve on may present an installation concern. The fear is there may be insufficient thickness of the remaining cylinder to support the new repair liner. As the repair sleeve comes to its final resting position, the ledge may fracture or break out causing additional concern. Visually viewing a single block, it is apparent the variance in block casting.
To help reduce the possibility of a break-out condition from a conventional repair sleeve installation, an available flanged sleeve has been created and is available under Part #FORD64FLG (New Price: $124.50). The flange allows for a straight through oversize boring operation at the bottom of the cylinder reducing any additional block stress. The sleeve rests up at the top deck and is covered by the head gasket.
This flanged sleeve is made from a hardened Moly2000 Ductile Iron material, which mimics the original block casting. The sleeve dimensions are shown in the chart below.
